Originally opened in 1834 after inmates had set fire to the previous jail and a number of buildings in downtown, the Herkimer Jail remained open with few modifications until its closure in the early 1980's. The historic jail remained abandoned after its closure until it came under the care of the historical society.

Utica’s psychiatric center was the home of the straight jacket and the Utica crib, Willard Asylum was the first place in NY to provide long-term mental health care, and the Newark State School, as it was initially called, was developed to provide primarily women skills that would allow them to be productive in society.

Now restored, the Hotel Utica is once again housing travelers but there are floors that remain off-limits to the public and rumors persist that departed guests still roam the halls.
