Recently, ghost hunters had the chance to investigate the Herkimer Jail. Originally opened in 1834 after inmates had set fire to the previous jail and a number of buildings in downtown, the Herkimer Jail remained open with few modifications until its closure in the early 1980's. The historic jail remained abandoned after its closure until it came under the care of the historical society.

After the unbelievalble turnout in 2014 for the tours of Utica's Old Main State Mental Hospital, the Landmark's Society of Greater Utica on hosted a low-profile tour of the historic landmark in 2015. Today, the historic building is opening for public tours yet again.

One of the interesting facts about Central New York, that is usually pretty unknown, is the area’s contribution to the evolution of humane care in asylums. Utica’s psychiatric center was the home of the straight jacket and the Utica crib, Willard Asylum was the first place in NY to provide long-term mental health care, and the Newark State School, as it was initially called, was developed to provide primarily women skills that would allow them to be productive in society.

Saranac Lake, now a scenic town in the Adirondacks, was once the premiere destination for patients suffering from tuberculosis.These deceased patients are still observed today. Many of the former cure cottages are reported to be haunted.

Towering over downtown Utica, the hotel serves as the city’s crown jewel, having hosted Presidents and Hollywood stars but the hotel lost some of its grandeur as it sat vacant at the end of the 20th Century. Now restored, the Hotel Utica is once again housing travelers but there are floors that remain off-limits to the public and rumors persist that departed guests still roam the halls.

When looking at what makes a good ghost story, the elements that are looked for are a tragic back story, a creepy location, and sometimes a tantalizing mystery. A lot of well-known ghost stories end up becoming more myth than fact, and the true tragedy of their haunting takes a back burner to the spirit sightings themselves.

In a location such as the Thousand Islands, where there are (literally) a thousand islands, it takes something special to make a specific island stand out. Heart Island has the tragic past of the Boldt family, Dark Island has massive Singer Castle, and Longue Vue Island stands out as the only man-made island in the chain.
