Known as the Bermuda triange of space the South Atlantic Anomaly
has been responsilble for strange lights, space shuttle laptop
computers crashing and failures of network satellites.
Some spacecraft such as the Hubble are even programmed to switch off
delicate instruments as they fly through the zone to avoid getting
damaged. The ISS has been given extra shielding for protection.
The anomaly even affects astronauts causing "Shooting stars" in their
field of vision.
It is located a few hundred kilometers above the coast of Brazil. It's
where the Van Allen radiation Belts come closest to the Earth's
Researchers at the National Institute for Astrophysics in Italy have been
studying data from an x-ray monitoring satellite called BeppoSAX. The data
shows that the anomaly is moving westwards.
There is currently a space telescope being designed that will orbit
the lower part of the danger zone which is not well studied.
Hopefully we will gain more insight into this strange ph
