On Friday, January 27, 2012 our Sun released a huge, spectacular X-class flare. These X flares are the most powerful class of solar outburst. The X-2 class flare caused a strong radio blackout at low-latitudes and energetic protons accelerated by the blast are now surrounding our planet and a S1-class radiation storm is in progress. Solar observatories have captured images and videos of this spectacular burst.
