People have been studying dreams for as long as there’ve been people and dreams, but it wasn’t until the last 50-odd years or so that we really made any progress. (It’s a slow field: Talk to any dream scientist and they’ll tell you the current technology can only do so much.

MAR 19, 2016 - It’s estimated that most people will have a lucid dream — one in which they are aware that they are asleep and might have some measure of control over their actions — at least once in their life. But there are those who claim to “get lucid” much more frequently.

The world of dreams is a mystery to all. We dream every night when we go to sleep, though sometimes we remember our dreams and sometimes we do not. It can be a lot of fun to relay your dreams to friends and coworkers the next day, but often their significance is only perceptible to yourself and you end up boring your audience with a long, drawn-out recall of the previous night’s adventures.

We spend around six years of our lives dreaming – that's 2,190 days or 52,560 hours. Although we can be aware of the perceptions and emotions we experience in our dreams, we are not conscious in the same way as when we're awake. This explains why we can't recognise that we're in a dream and often mistake these bizarre narratives for reality.

From an early age I frequently had vivid dreams of three brownish rock-like creatures coming from deep underground after me. During the night I would see them coming up a spiral staircase cut into the rocky earth. I would become increasingly afraid in the dream as they approached. This is a large staircase with emptiness in the middle, dropping into a deep darkness below.

The Japanese call it pok-kuri. Filipinos call it bangungot or batibat. For the Hmong people of Vietnam and Laos, it is the tsob tsuang. Taiwanese men, some of whom wear lipstick to bed in order to deceive nocturnal ghosts, claim it is the phi am or a malevolent spirit who, much like Freddy Krueger, steals away the souls of young men in their sleep. All these names refer to the same thing: Nightmare Death Syndrome.

Awake in Dreamtime, how to Lucid Dream By Dr Kimberli Ridgeway There are times that I think that the dreamtime experience is more real and tangible than the time I spend awake. From an early age I had dreams that warned of things to come. Being young, and not having anyone in my circle to discuss these things with, I was lost. As I grew older, these experiences changes, morphed into different types of “real” dreams. As I had more experiences, I began to understand the difference between dreams that just processed my days events and those that were what I call “Dreamtime.” In my 20’s I decided to that just experiencing the dreams was not enough, and I wanted to become more active in my dreams. So, one of the things I did was to keep a journal, not only of dreams, but things in the awake time that could be associated with dreamtime. This is something I suggest that anyone who is looking to expand on their dreaming experience do as often as possible. Something you write today may not make sense when you wri

"The Planck institute scientists proved that scans of ’lucid dreamers’ dreams looked the same as scans of their brain when they do the same thing while conscious. The research, published in Current Biology, could be used with recently demonstrated ’reconstruction’ technology to create moving images of people’s dreams." Dystopia, here we go!

Lucid dreaming occurs when the dreamer knows that she is dreaming. It’s among the most controversial areas of dream research, partly because of misperceptions over how much individuals can influence dreams -- or more importantly, whether they should.
