Vampire Evolution: From Myth to Modern Day - An ExcerptThursday, September 17, 2015
By Corvis Nocturnum
Vampires are beings of myth, folkloric creatures subsisting on the blood of the living, that have been recorded in nearly every culture around the world since the beginning of man. Old tales depicted the vampires of legend as reanimated corpses, wraiths dressed in tattered burial shrouds who hunted mere mortals in the night. The legends originated in Eastern Europe and spread to the west, popping up whenever friends and family spotted the deceased after death, or when villagers died of mysterious causes. Contemporary historians cited these cases as proof of the existence of vampires in hundreds of stories spreading from older Russia Serbis, Poland, and Greece. However, this is not a work that looks solely at the European vampire alone. The vampire may be most widely known in these regions, but it is hardly their only place of mastery. Indeed, the vampire is a worldwide phenomenon.

Of all the supernatural monsters that we know, maybe we know vampires the best. After all we’ve read about them in books, watched them on film and television and even played them in board and video games. We know all there is to know about them. For instance, we know what they look like – gaunt and pallid East European noblemen wrapped in dark capes, or some angst-ridden acned teenager attending High School somewhere in America. We know where they are to be found – some gloomy castle in Transylvania; a Gothic mansion in New Orleans; some everyday College. And we know how to get rid them – stake them through the heart; show them a crucifix; shake a bulb of garlic at them. They are the dead, risen from the grave that come to drink our blood at nightfall.
