If the whole performance has been just a rehearsed confidence trick, it was extremely inept. Counter-intuitively, I suspect it is not a confidence trick, but something rather more interesting: an example of the groping for other-worldly experiences that is such an enduring feature of the modern world. The more science tells us it knows all the answers, the more we protest, in our millions, that there are other answers, ones that science cannot fully explain.
