April 1845. The world's largest telescope points toward the M51 nebula, a fuzzy patch of light near the Big Dipper. Peering through the telescope, astronomer Lord Rosse is the first to see the nebula's spiral shape. Astronomers soon found that many other nebulae are shaped like spirals.
