In the US, back in 1830's a major earthquke hit in western tennesse and did almost the same thing.. geysers made of sand... history channel said it was pressure that caused it.

Perhaps what were seeing here is actually Muddy Water?Though it looks like sand too me it could be an optical illusion based on the quality of the video...Just a theory.
