How deep does your reality run?

Perceptions of reality can be so startlingly different from one another that its as though some of them exist on another plane, or layer. For most 'normal' people, what you see is more-or-less what you get. There's work, school, sports, all the normal activities, and money is the highest priority for a lot of people. But if you work in government intelligence, run your own drug cartel or anything of that nature, you don't look at the world the same way. The ordinary world is a convenient illusion for covering your world of shadowy people, shady dealings and dark secrets. This is what I call layer 2, the Underworld. If you are aware of the paranormal, this changes your perception so radically that you've essentially uncovered another reality running beneath even the Underworld. Most people interested in the occult are dimly aware of that world, but realize they don't know much about it, like they're operating at around 2.5 levels in their universe. There may be more.If you play role-playing games such as Vampire: the Masquerade, they point out that even those who are deeply supernaturally connected don't know everything going on. They may have their own Underworld, a 4th layer that eludes even their most learned. If there are real vampires or other supernatural beings in our world, the 4th layer may indeed exist, but it's so far removed from the ordinary Joe that we will never have even a slight awareness of it.In stories of the Cthulhu Mythos and such, there seems to be an implication of even deeper layers, where even a well-learned supernatural underworld investigator would be surprised and out of his element at times. That's about as far as I'm going to speculate here. But the question is: how deep is your world?

I like the way you think. Though I doubt the answers to the question would be valid. Kind of like asking a person their IQ....there are a lot of false answers, no one wants to be low on that scale. By the way, Wraith: The Oblivion was spectacular in its "story", I never actually played that one.

"I like the way you think"Thank you. I'm sure a lot of people would consider me totally nuts I apologize if I'm making anyone feel inferior or weirdly competitive about it or something. It's kind of a rhetorical question really, just designed to make people think.Wraith is pretty cool, though I think it could be hard to play. At times, the Storyteller needs people to add a second role as shadows or specters, or do it all themselves. Some people might also get pissed off out-of-character about how they're being treated by their shadow/psyche etc. And angst piles up pretty quick and is hard to get rid of, whereas pathos can be harder to get and quickly be used up on powers and so forth. So it has its innate difficulties, though yes, the story is really interesting.

What i will say about the IQ system of doing things is more to do with how ones mind works logically in a given space of time...it is more of an academic quality, which maybe in tiself good, but IQ tests and paranormal dont go, because one doesnt get a feeling for puzzles and timestables, and you do not need intuition to work out percentages and fractions, so on the same take how does one apply logic to something as illogical  as ghosts, abductions etc  hmmm i would also like to say that just because one is interested on such matters as the occult it doesnt mean that their perception of reality is any different from someone who says lives a 9-5pm job.  Would you also say that if one person is an aductee and knows it is different from another who is an abductee but doesnt realise it, perception of reality is an everchanging thing, because no two people will ever see the same thing, so therefore their realities will always be different, its a personal thing, for everyone, like what is real for one doesnt make that a reality for another and vice versa.....hmm again of course i could be on the wrong track altogether ....and not have a clue...about what was written and if thats the case i am very sorry....oh well back to la la land   i have never heard of the games mentioned above as for realities if there were things as levels i would say 3 1/2-4 was mine, mindblowingly so....

Deeper than pop culture. "Deep" implies a finite measurement, and Fantasia has no boundaries. Grr on you.

Well, not me...not yet. :)I wonder sometimes what life would be like for me had the 'experiences' I've had not happened. I see friends and relatives and such that are so far removed from that reality that I really do have to wonder. Barring the UFO realm, which seemed to be the major piece of the pie in my experiences, I have also had ghost and 'other' that have a slice in it as well. But then I started having past life memories at the age of about four. So, if I removed all those pieces, what would I be like? I can say it must be a real challenge for people who have had no experiences. There are hurdles I'm sure like the feeling of inferiority, jealousy, etc. So many things that would make you say, "It's all bull", and only seek out that which supports their view.Operating at a level of 2.5 and deeper makes for a very lonely existence. Kind of like Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something. So you trudge through your day hoping that from time to time you meet someone close to your level of perception. The problem is that even those who have broken the crust of the 'deeper' perception still have a tendency to buffer it with something from the mundane world. Religion or group mind beliefs take a strong hold there to keep them operating and feeling safe and secure. There are far fewer that go any deeper because it can be a scary thing. Not to say I have a problem with people who cling to the group mentality, just that it holds very little value for me personally. I am completely comfortable if I am the only person in the world who believes what I believe. Lonely, yes. Unfortunate, perhaps. But, I'll take it over the group mentality. Generally speaking, it has been my experience that the "group" is usually wrong anyway.Three cheers for depth.

I guess my perception of "deep" would be the ability to connect all things. And not in schizophrenic way. Its just that all things, everything you do or say and everything everyone elses does or says. Kind of like the butterfly effect I guess. Also everything that happens in the natural world is connected to everything else, and on and on and on, or back and back and back. No man is an island it is said. We are the sum of everything and everyone.

" perception of reality is an everchanging thing, because no two people will ever see the same thing, so therefore their realities will always be different"A quotable quote. I like it.  And it's true. What's real for me isn't necessarily real for you, which is one reason why I don't believe in any 'One True Path'." if there were things as levels i would say 3 1/2-4 was mine, mindblowingly so...."Sounds fascinating. True enough. That's basically my point though. There's always more to the world. However much we may think we know about the real big picture, we're probably missing some things.

Well said. Beautiful thought. I wish more people realized it, we would probably find it a lot harder to exploit eachother and our world, and have wars, greed and everything else if we really kept that in mind.
