The First Beer of Many More *Grabs the microphoneIf the end is nearAnd it might, you seeI hope there's beer where there shouldn't beYes! A pint of aleIn an angel's handsJust to tell my tale of distant landsHis beer looks goodMy mouth is dry--This pint, it should not pass me by"Where I came from,Take a seat, you see,Men are freed through slavery."I take a sip,Boy, what a tasteAs I begin to like this place"It's a simple task,With a word or three,Give man a cuff and name it keyOr call it trustWhen your world is liesSo that they never realizeThat true is falseAnd false is trueThat love is what's inside of youBut they have noneYet they won't saySince the empty ones do rule the dayAnd own the wordsThe board, the game,And teach all man to die in shameBecause out is inAnd in is out--It's a fucked up world I'm talking about.Oh, the places you'll goOh, the person you'll beFrom birth to death--in slavery."I slam it backIt tastes so goodI drink and drink just like I shouldHe laughs and says,"I played that game,Where good is bad, they feel the sameAnd up is downAnd down is upYou piss in bowls, then lap it upAnd war is peaceAnd peace is war--Give me your glass, I'll get you more--And work all dayFor success, you see,And forget you have a familyAnd white is blackAnd black is whiteYes, work all day just to sleep at night! That game, my friend,Is such a bitch,You tax the poor to feed the richTrickle it down?Nay, trickle it up!But no one says because it's so fucked up."I laugh and smileHis beaming face--Dear Lord, I'm gonna love this place.

You inspire me to write again... I always loved your poetry b/c it was funny, not so dark like mine tends to be. I love this one b/c it expresses exactly how I feel about our country today. That said, I like 'our' coffee shops in bookstores, subliminal movies (and yea I'll go buy anything you can fit in my subconcious), computerized oblivion. Im not sure I want to be unplugged from the matrix, despite the fact that I know Im plugged in. Im a strange mixture and I think I represent a portion of society. I believe in some conspiracy theories, support my husbands survivalist attitude and still want to have a latte when I want it. hahaha (I laugh but its not so funny on many levels). Anyway thats why I love this poem. Should I break the chains? Is there anything better out there?

Have you seen the movie "Land of the Blind" with Ray Fiennes? You should rent it if you havent. I would love to hear what you thought of it.

This poem is exactly how I feel about our country today as well, and it also expresses an optimism that, even if the end is near, at least there's beer! A true angel would not judge...a true angel would offer free refills.Break the chains? It is so painful. It is a complete turning point of no return to break the chains. It requires an internal belief that is so incredible, you need to almost sacrifice your sanity upon its altar as an offering.

The only problem with that logic is that I dont really like beer. A Fosters rarely but thats about it. What will be left for people like me? A really good ' Sex on the Beach ' (the drink - dont get excited) but that requires extended collection of liquor and cranberry juice (among other things) you should right a poem about that.

the reason why i take interest harper is because america is in allegience with australia, back when bush was president we had mr john howard whom caused many problems for this country whist siding with bush,we sent troops to iraq and afganistan..now that we have kevin rudd we will be pulling those troops out,as will obama..america was the super power of the world but led us all into a financial breakdown, obama has so much work cut out for him in some ways hes just cleaning up the terrible mess that bush made..i like to look at the bigger picture harper..and for someone whom was cheering for palin its obvious that you didnt even look past gender !! keep up the good work harps!!
