I saw faces and images forming out of light rainbows while I was half awake/asleep. Happened to you?

This was truly bizarre for me. Happened twice in the past month. I paid attention because it was a different state of mind than the 'dream state.' Pictures of people's faces were forming out of rainbow light. The only equivalent I can come up with is if I were staring into water. I was watching them form in front of my eyes. A person's face would appear and it was shocking because mentally I was saying to myself, "What the hell is this? I'm not asleep yet." Completely random but they were being created too quickly for me to be the one drawing them out of my imagination. I could see the images even when my eyes were open. Anybody have a similar experience?

In my late teens i had a few spooky episodes when laying down and taking 10 or so mins to rest.  A strange image would form in front of my eyes displaying one side of a odd looking head that had black moist eyes.  The face at first would grab my attention leaving me laying there thinking - wow!  But then it would move closer until its eye was almost touching mine. I`d then jump upright, eyes wide open.  Around the same time as these wieird events i recall alot of "bumps in the night" or "ghostly type activity".  I can remember one night getting up to visit the loo and going to the window because everything was deadly quiet outside, and everything seemed still?!?!In my early thirties the same thing happened again only this time the face or head looked younger - this scared the hell out of me.  I saw its face full on as it appeared to be glancing over my left shoulder. And finally, around 2 years back on a sunday afternoon i went for a nap after a heavy sunday lunch.  I couldnt drift iff into sleep so i just lay there, eyes closed listening to the radio.  Another episode or vision occured.  A tall broad shouldered man with a odd head stood in what appeared to be a arched room made of stone.  He almost looked human apart from the fact that his face seemed stretched horizontally, thin neck, long human looking eyes, high stretched cheek bones and no hair.  He wore a tan coloured robe or gown.  For a few micro seconds I just took in the amazing image thinking "where the hell as this come from?"  Then reality kicked in and my thoughts where "OMG, its real!!!!"  Needless to say, i jumped up, left the bedroom and took the dog for a walk pondering over this wierdness. All these experiences are the kind that one finds hard to talk to others about.  Its left me wondering if i went into a brief trance or something.Ive never used drugs so please dont think this is some trip related experience.

Did all these events happen in the same place, your house?

This seems like  something similar that I've experienced on a handful of occasions. Ususally, I'm just waking up when I've seen "rainbow" hallucinations. The first occurence was before I ever experimented with any drugs/alcohol. I was about 13 when it first happened. I was napping late in the evening and I woke up on my stomach, my face toward the wall. I saw a very cartoonish outline of a girl as if looking from behind her, and she was walking away. The outline was made of the same kind of impression a flash of a camera leaves in your eyes. The girl faded and words written backward appeared. I couldn't make them out, partially because I was freaking out right about then. The wall was like a weird movie screen. While I was seeing this, I tried to get up .I had the sensation that a large person was on top of me holding me down. I tried to turn my head, move my arms and eventually tried to scream. I couldn't move or make a sound and I was panicking. After what coud have only been 2 minutes, I broke out of this hold and ran into the living room scared out of my mind.  I have a form of Sleep Paralysis. I don't know if you were paralyzed at any point, but hallucinations commonly occur with this. Your mind awakens from sleep, but your body remains in the sleeping state. You teeter between the dream world and real world, so the hallucinations can be intense and dreamlike. It seems like your account has to do with sleep, so maybe the two are linked?

wow...thanks for the input. I had it happen again today, too. Most of the time, the half dream/half awake hallucination is showing me people's faces or distant locations. As for the sleep paralysis, this is something that happens to me as well about once a month, but this 'rainbow' thing is something different, as I can move when it happens. The sleep paralysis, however, is pretty intense, and yeah, I generally hallucinate things or beings in the room at the same time, trying to take something from me, laugh at me, or hurt me in some way, as they think it is amusing when I cannot move. I don't associate it with abduction, however, as a lot of people do. My sleep paralysis generally follow my recurring dreams of ritualistic abuse where someone is either trying to get me to do something I do not want to do, or is trying to hurt me and take my energy in some way, shape, or form. I've spent years analyzing the experience with the only conclusion being it is either something to do with repressed memories, a previous life, or spiritual leeches that are floating around on some different plane and are using me in some fashion.

I have had similar events happen back when I was first starting to do deep meditation, and then later when starting to do astral projection.  I wish I had something tto tell you in the way of the cause, but I don't.  There are a number of valid explanations.  Possibly they are being dreamed, or they may be memories.  They could also be spirits or angelic beings trying to communicate.  If it happens again I would suggest trying to continue letting your mind drift and send thoughts toward the faces.  Try to communicate, but in a subtle and quiet fashion.  Try to use only thoughts or whisper.  Anohter thing you could do is free write.  When you go to bed ut a notepad under your hand and hold onto a pen or pencil.  It won't matter if it is your subconcience or an outisde intelligence, if what you are seeing is anything more than just a dream, your hand should begin to write a message as you fall asleep.  I have done this myself, sometimes you get enlightening information, and sometimes you get gibberish, but it's something anyway.

It happened again this morning. I'm getting better at it. I shut my eyes and stare at the blackness. Then I focus on the reflection of my eyes in the darkness, which basically takes the form of two circles. When I bring the two circles together, a distinct and clear vision opens up, so much more vivid than a dream. The problem now is, when I try to look around the scene, my eyes change direction, the circles depart, and I lose focus, so I can only see the scenes briefly, for a couple seconds at most. When you try to refocus, the vision shifts, so you can't go back to it. The trick, I think, is to not move my eyes, and let them see what they see, and don't look around at all, which I think should take some practice. I also found this extremely interesting book from the esoteric community, saying to create a series of dream journals, one for each day. The point is that your dreams match each other or speak of the same things in coded messages once a week, so your monday dreams will have one focus, teusday dreams another focus, etc...and if you don't record them this way, everything is too muddled to draw any sense out of them. By doing this I realized that my friday/saturday night dreams are the most intense, and also the most frightening, generally dealing with ritualistic abuse. I also have a repeated visitor in these dreams that I've named cinderella who I 'met' in a dream I had when I was 21. She is generally the most frightening of all dream entities, as she's attempted to rip out my soul before, and when I experience sleep paralysis, it is usually her doing, and I see her in the room when I awake in some form, whether that is in the form of a little girl or grown woman. i know who she is because I feel her presence. And this morning while I was practicing the rainbow focusing, I saw a porcelain faced woman floating directly above my head. She turned downwards and looked at me, and it scared the shit out of me like she always does as I recognized her. I also saw scenes of war when I asked to view a past life. I'm now under the impression that my friday night dreams have to do with repressed memories and emotions, whether those are from this life or a past life. Even in the rainbow morning visions, that now seems to be the theme. Cinderella generally works to humiliate me in front of my family, or assist in me being a part of some ritual, only to wake up in a completely paralyzed state. I get the impression that I am being fed on for being open, but I can't prove that, obviously.

Glad to shed the light on the situation.  I started the meditation to help clear my mind because my job at the time was so stressful and I was having all kinds of crazy nightmares from it.  I've also started playing delta wave beats on my computer when sleeping to help facilitate a deeper, less restless sleep.

I'm getting better at doing this. Seems like the rainbow hallucinations happen the most when you try to make out faces in the blackness. Afterwards, a scene forms, associated somehow with the face in brilliant detail. Then it fades. I can't hold on to the pictures for very long, but they are so much more intense than dreams even though don't last nearly as long. It seriously feels like I am teleported elsewhere or bilocating myself, as they are so vivid, as if I truly am there--wherever 'there' is...

Jeff,I have the same exact things happen to me about once a week since 2001, the faces of people I have never seen before, words or phrases, objects and even rainbows.  My wife has never had it, and I never spoke about it to anyone else for fear people would think I am crazy and it would damage my career.  Now I can focus on them well and always say what I am seeing out loud and try to figure out what the message is,  but I will tell you these visions always accompany the feeling that someone un-seen is with me as I am lying there.  I know many people may not believe in Angels, but that is truly who I feel is responsible. Only recently i have started to see the faces of a typical alien gray, only real ... i mean REAL looking, not like the crap on the internet or the movies.  It scares the heck out of me and i lose focus after that.  Now my wife has seen the flashes of light floating around in our bedroom at the same time i am calling out the faces... so she still calls me crazy, but believes that something is happening.  This is what first got me interested in paranormal subjects.  Look I don’t know if you believe in the Wholly Bible- but I do and it all ties into this… into the secret of everything.  I truly believe these alien beings are in fact the fallen angles that once walked the earth and took human wives.  We know from the bible that they can’t cleave to human DNA genetically, that is why there are abductions and harvesting.  I have lots to say on this matter.. but my point is did you ever wonder what the punishment was for those beautiful women who seduced the angles… I think I know.. I think that their beauty was striped from them and they became the witch’s of today’s fairytales.  There is a reason why they call sleep paralyses the “white witch” often sitting on your chest so you cant move.  I think they are the ones coming to us with these angles and testing if the anger that is held stock in our soul has subsided yet.  The ones that have no anger are the ones they are now persuading and will corrupt upon their return. The ones who are still angry, still remember somewhere inside… we are their enemy.    Cinderella is testing you in your dream’s (remember Satan has control of the those, that is why Jesus did not want to fall asleep before his arrest and was mad that his apostles allowed him to even be tempted by Lucifer)  The rainbow means the same thing it always has- is a sign of God’s promise to us.  I am not into meditation or yoga or any of that new age astral projection stuff, I am just a normal guy with a crazy opinion.

I have had things happen like that a lot, but not involving rainbows. After comming home after a normal day, without stress from work, I laid down and the second I looked at the ceiling I seen what looked like a decaying human head talking to me and getting closer, I was not even tired, it has happened three times in my life. One time to check if it was a hallucination I stared at an apparition for about 10 minutes straight. This one was a lot more detailed and it stared at me and looked away from me as if something distracted it, but I closed my eyes for a couple of seconds and stared at a light, and when I looked at the same spot it was still looking at me, it looked a lot like a demon, but not a deccaying face. Also one time while I was awake I had what I thought was complete contact with some one that was dying or was in a lot of trouble and was actually killed and thrown into a river. Then I heard a voice I have never heard before yell something at me because I was refusing to believe what I was seing.

Oh yeah and by the way these apparitions were affixed to a certain plane of the surface I was staring at and when I moved my head or looked at the surface at an angle, the eyes stayed locked with mine and one appeared to become angry that I was not paying attention to it, I would see how that would anger something like that if it thought it was wasting its energy trying to communicate with me.

I have also tried freewriting, but in the sketching form. Without looking at the paper and completely ignoring what I was drawing, what helps me is to draw random things without thought, after looking at my sketch after thinking it was nothing, I looked at it as a whole, and what I saw was completely reiculous, it was an exact "Outer body" view of a place that I sit once in a while, as if I were staring at myself, but everything was exact, I drew geometricly exact shadow castings, exact depth of field geometry, and also there were beams of lights comming out of the exact curtain I drew, after having this happen, I realized that things can be plante into your subconcious, but the weird thing was I had never viewed that room at that exact angle before, so how could my mind store exact depth of field geometry later for me to incoherently spill it out on paper. I would suggest this though, try drawing you exact surrounds but try not to pay attention to it, or while you are out there, draw something complex and something will emerge, but you have to blank it out of your mind while you are doing it.

I suppose I'll share my story as well.  About 6 months ago some of my alternative spirituality friends and I started experimenting with salvia divinorum to fuel more extreme astral projection experiences.  Not high concentrations like people use for the more psychedelic experiences, but small doses like chewing salvia leaves or smoking the unconcentrated dosages.  This gives you the feeling of being disconnected from your body and makes astral projection easier.  While projecting this way I suddenly saw a flash of movement out of the corner of my metaphysical eye, I tried to follow it but whatever was there was faster than I.  Then I heard a hushed voice, it sounded like a young male voice, ask, "Do you think he saw us?"  Then I heard an older female voice say, "I think so, should we take him with us?"  After hearing that I immediately made a strategic withdrawal and returned to my conscious body.  I know some people are going to say that this was just a salvia trip, but trust me after enough use, especially at the dosages we use, I know that this was not a hallucination, nor was it any influence from the environment because we use a sensory deprivation tank for astral projection.  Make of it what you will, but I think that where ever I was there were other sentient life there that I felt was from that plane.

Officially this called hypnagogia. These dreams between waking and sleeping are different, ofter eerie and sleep paralysis is normal with these.I still believe there is more to dreams than science's poor understanding of them but hopefully that word gives some frame of reference for finding out more and knowing that none of you are insane! I think C.G. Jung experimented with these quite a bit and its a poorly kept secret that his academic theories of the dream world were the watered down version for the boring scientists ;-)I guess we're talking about gateways here then!

Another thing I read recently: sleep paralysis is sometimes caused by liver toxicity. It caught my eye because one time I had sleep paralysis was after slamming 4 shots of jack daniels in a hotel room.

Officially this called hypnagogia. Thanks for the info, a1kemi. The wikipedia entry on this is fantastic :) SightsAmong the more commonly reported, and more thoroughly researched, sensory features of hypnagogia are phosphenes which can manifest as seemingly random speckles, lines or geometrical patterns, including form constants, or as figurative (representational) images. They may be monochromatic or richly colored, still or moving, flat or three-dimensional (offering an impression of perspective). Imagery representing movement through tunnels of light is also reported. Individual images are typically fleeting and given to very rapid changes. They are said to differ from dreams proper in that hypnagogic imagery is usually static and lacking in narrative content, although others understand the state rather as a gradual transition from hypnagogia to fragmentary dreams, i.e. from simple ‘eigenlicht’ to whole imagined scenes. Hypnagogia can be induced with a Dreamachine, which uses light pulsing at a frequency close to that of alpha waves to create this effect. Descriptions of exceptionally vivid and elaborate hypnagogic visuals can be found in the work of Marie-Jean-Léon, Marquis d'Hervey de Saint Denys.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HypnagogiaApparently Dali used to create his paintings by drawing from hypnagogia images that came to him, too. Creative :) Whether or not gateways are opened during that time....who knows? Obviously, though, it seems to me that I'm tapping into some frequency when I get it, that's for sure.
